As the July sun is setting, a group of about 20 people are standing in a circle, their arms floating slowly in the space around them. They improve their body awareness with a series of movements, alternating between tensing up their muscles and relaxing them. With the instructor’s guidance, these dancers, of all ages, explore new ways to manipulate and control their bodies.
This was the scene at a recent Gaga dance workshop organized by the Israel Center of the Jewish Federation of Durham-Chapel Hill. The Israel Center is dedicated to bringing Israeli culture – dance, music, film, food – to the Durham-Chapel Hill community. Some of the programs organized by the Israel Center have been in existence for a while, such as Hebrew classes for native Hebrew speakers, Israeli Author Book club, Israel Center Film Series, partnership with American Dance Festival, as well as Israel’s Memorial Day and Independence Day commemorations.
In the next year, Israel center is looking to expand its programming to include new speaker series, Mommy and me in Hebrew classes, Hebrew for adults, holiday picnics, and Shabbat dinners.
Hope to see you there!
