Volunteer Sign Up  Support Mitzvah Day and Donations

The 14th Annual Mitzvah Day is on Weds., Dec. 25, 2019!

This annual event is a community outreach effort coordinated by the Jewish Federation of Durham-Chapel Hill in conjunction with local synagogues and Jewish organizations. With many people off work and school, it’s the chance to come together and do something meaningful.

Mitzvah Day kicks off with a community breakfast at the Levin JCC at 9:00am. After breakfast, volunteers depart for their various assignments around the community – cooking meals at local shelters, cleaning parks and trails, delivering gifts to those in need, making blankets for people experiencing homelessness, and more.

Do I have to pre-register for a project? Yes, pre-registering for a project ensures that volunteers can be best prepared to serve at our partnering organizations and that everyone has the best experience. We may have a few spaces for walk-in volunteers.

How do I pick a project? If you go to the volunteer sign up page, click the title of a project to go to the sign up. On each of the sign ups, you have the option to make a donation and order t-shirts – if you choose any of these, you will be taken to a payment page to complete the process.

Can I volunteer with my friends? While we are not able to set aside volunteer spots for groups of friends, feel free to talk with your friends and plan to sign up for the same project.  And of course, Mitzvah Day is also a great chance to connect with new people!

The project I wanted is full. Can you add me anyway? Because of limitations in space, supplies, or tasks, most projects have a cap on volunteers. If the project you were most interested in is full, please check out the list of projects to see what else might interest you.

Why do some project have a cost associated? Many people in our community are in need of food, clothing, and other items, so many of our projects ask volunteers to purchase or cook something to help meet those needs. There are also lots of projects that have no cost associated!

When I register for a project, how will I find out where to be and when?When you sign up, you will see in the project descriptions, location, and times. Your Project Leader will contact you by the middle of December to go over details. Many projects meet up at the JCC for community breakfast at 9:00 am. If you have not heard from your Project Leader by 12/15, contact mseltman@levinjcc.org

I know a great organization in the community. How can I make it a Mitzvah Day project? Typically our project list is finalized in September. Contact us to let us know about ideas for projects for next year!

What color are the t-shirts!? Check back for color! You can order short sleeve ($8) or long sleeve ($13)! Pre-ordered shirts may be picked up at breakfast at the JCC on Mitzvah Day, and a limited quantity of extras will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

I’m out of town on Dec 25th, how can I help? You can participate in collections of food, clothing, books, toys, diapers, and more at various Jewish agencies in our community. Click here to donate to our online Tzedakah Box and see where you can donate items around the community. Your donation supports supplies for projects as well as administrative costs of Mitzvah Day.
