Meet our Camp staff – Levin JCC

Year-round Staff

Jillian Lea, MAAA, Youth and Camp Manager or 919-354-4948
Jillian is originally from Graham, NC. She has a Masters in Arts Administration from Indiana University. She is a yogi, a crafter, a sewer, and an astrology lover. Jillian handles day-to-day operations for summer and School’s Out camps and is the main contact for registration and camper questions and concerns.


Madeline Seltman, MSW, Director of Engagement or 919-354-4938
Madeline has worked at the JCC since 2010 and oversees kids and adults programming, family programs and events, childcare, and programs for people with special needs. She has two kiddos, a Lerner School preschooler and a toddler. Madeline is the main contact for special needs inclusion and scholarships.


2017 Leadership staff

Kim-Lan, Aftercare Manager, is a familiar face at the JCC, as she also works in childcare and at the Welcome Desk. Kim-Lan has two daughters and is a photographer and disability rights activist.


Leah, Inclusion Facilitator, is a Autism Specialist in a local school system and has been in Special Education for over 15 years. She has 5 year old twins who will be at camp this summer.


Jen, Inclusion consultant, is back with us for the third year. She in a Speech and Language Pathologist in private practice and specializes in Social Thinking. She also has two kids.


Kieran, Head Counselor, is back for a second summer at Camp Shelanu and 6th year working summer camp in general! They are at Durham Tech studying to get their Associates in Science, with a focus on psychology. They enjoy playing with their dog Zane, reading, coloring, and playing board games with friends.

KaylenKaylen, Head Counselor, just finished his sophmore year at Davidson College. He can name all 50 state capitals.



Joel, Head Counselor, is a rising senior at Butler University studying Dance Pedagogy. This is his third year back at camp. He loves spaghetti and chicken pot pies. When he’s not dancing he loves being with friends and family and traveling.


Clare, Art Specialist/LIT Facilitator, is in her sixth summer at Camp Shelanu. She is a rising junior at Appalachian State, studying Child Development. She just got back from four months of study abroad in Ireland! She loves traveling and eating ice cream!


Corrigan, Assistant Inclusion Facilitator,  is back for a third summer at Camp Shelanu. Their life ambition is to own every single glow-in-the-dark Shopkin.


HopeHope, Art Specialist, is in her third full summer working at Camp Shelanu! In the fall she’ll be a senior at the University of Rochester in NY, where she is majoring in statistics, and minoring in mathematics, studio art, and political science. She loves drawing and painting, being active outside, and food!


ChrisChris, Nature Camp Instructor, has been a teacher for 19 years and is returning to Camp Shelanu for his third summer. He doesn’t always like to meditate but tries anyway.


Sarah, Music specialist, is here for her first summer. She teaches piano, trombone and chorus at the Lerner school during the school year. She has a 5 year old who will be attending Camp Shelanu this summer!


Hannah, Snakes Specialist, is excited to teach the campers about her two ball pythons, Maxine and Samantha, for a second summer.



Jaxon, Nature and Sports Specialist, has worked at a summer camp in Durham for the past four years. He is graduating from NC State with a degree in English at the end of the summer and is planning on joining the Peace Corps in the next year. He has an extensive collection of novelty socks and has too many pets.

GwenGwen, Camp Assistant, is majoring in American Studies at the University of Virginia, and this will be her fifth summer at Camp Shelanu! She loves hiking, making collages, and swimming in the Eno.


Elizabeth, Administrative Assistant, is back for her fourth year at camp.  She is a rising junior at UNC-Chapel Hill where she is studying history and French. Her favorite animal is the slow loris.



2017 Israeli staff – Shlichot (emissaries)

NoaNoa is returning to Camp Shelanu for the second year! She will be our Israeli Culture and Drama specialist. She loves to sing and perform! She spent much of the past year traveling so ask her about her adventures!


Shay will be a general counselor this summer. She loves traveling, music and playing guitar, ukulele, and piano.


Liran will be our dance specialist this summer. She loves to dance, hang out with friends and go to the beach.


2017 Counselors

Josh is double majoring in Psychology and Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will be a junior this fall (and has yet to be converted into a UNC fan; the Duke loyalty is strong).


SophieSophie is in her third summer at Camp Shelanu. She goes to UNCG and is a business marketing major. She loves to sing, swim and cook!


Anna will be attending NC State University as a part of their engineering program this fall. She loves hanging out with friends, watching movies, and reading books.


Dorian 2016

Dorian will be attending Bryn Mawr College in the fall, and she is interested in studying acting, journalism, and gender issues! She is very involved in theatre and she’s a competitive jump roper!  It’s her third summer working at Camp Shelanu!


Kati attends UNC-Chapel Hill. She enjoys sunrises, various forms of fitness, and french fries with vinegar (instead of ketchup). This is her second year working at Camp and just had her first time traveling to Israel!


JenJenny is a rising senior at East Chapel Hill High School. She is excited to be back for a second year as a Shelanu counselor! In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her wonderful friends in cute cafes, going to as many concerts as humanly possibly, and relaxing with her cuddly cat, Butter.

Shir is excited to return to Camp Shelanu for the second time as a counselor! He is a recent high school graduate, and will be heading to Portland in the fall to study at Reed College. Shir loves musical theater and his pet gecko, Polly.


Janelle is an incoming freshman at East Carolina University where she’ll be majoring in Biology and minoring in English. She enjoys watching Netflix and eating and she is excited to return to camp for a second summer!



Ellie is a rising senior at Durham School of the Arts where she plays soccer and runs cross country. She loves hiking, gardening, and anything that is outdoors!




Priya is in her second year working as a counselor. She is a rising senior at Durham School of the Arts, where her focus is chorus. She is so excited to share another summer with everyone at Camp Shelanu!


Alfredo is in his second year working at Shelanu. He is studying History/Pre-Dental at UNC-Chapel Hill. Additionally, he is an Eagle Scout, a runner, and a backpacker.


MaddieMaddie is in her second year at Camp Shelanu! She is a junior at UNC-Chapel Hill studying political science. She loves nerdy TV shows, reading great books, and writing stories!


Carolina is a native Floridian. She’s a rising sophomore at Meredith College and will be pursuing a major in Psychology with a minor in Spanish. She enjoys going to music festivals and discovering new food trucks downtown. She makes amazing french toast.


Caroline is in her first year working at Camp Shelanu, but she has worked at another camp for the past three summers! She is a rising junior at East Carolina University and majoring in Social Work. In her free time,  she enjoys working out, running, and hanging out with friends!


Emma is a rising junior at Voyager Academy High School. Her favorite subject in school is Science. Outside of school, she loves to go out to eat with friends and spend time with family.


Hannah E is a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She hopes to become an elementary teacher. She enjoys art, spending time with friends, and watching UNC basketball!


Jacob is a rising junior at Chapel Hill High School and his favorite subject is History. He enjoys cross country, track, and drawing in his free time. He’s very excited to be working at Camp Shelanu for the first time this year.


Allison is in her first year at Camp Shelanu, but she has always loved going to camp! She is an exercise science major at Appalachian State and she hopes to become an occupational therapist in the future. She loves to run and do anything outdoors!


Jason graduated from the Camp Shelanu LIT program last summer. His favorite subjects in school are Latin and German. After school, he loves to run with the cross country team!


Javon is new to Camp Shelanu but worked for another camp the past two summers. His hobbies are reading and spending time with family and friends. He also works in the JCC childcare room.


Kala has attended summer camp every year since she was a little girl. She went to summer camp at child care network and the YMCA. Her favorite subject in school is math and she also dances.


Kasey is a junior at UNC-Greensboro, studying Therapeutic Recreation! This is her first summer at Camp Shelanu, though she loves summer camps and has worked at a few others. In her free time, she enjoys playing and listening to music, hiking, reading, studying, woodworking, being with family and friends, and being silly!

Matthew is a junior at Riverside High School. His favorite subject in school is math and hes want to be a chef. He plays football, soccer, swim and golf.


Noam is a rising Junior at Chapel Hill High School. He went to Camp Shelanu every year he could and is very excited to work as a counselor. He plays ultimate frisbee and his favorite subject in school is history.


Sydney spent her recent summers at sleepaway camp, and she went to Camp Shelanu when she was younger. Her favorite subject is math. She enjoys playing tennis and ultimate frisbee. She looks forward to spending the summer at Camp Shelanu.


Taylor has been working in camps in North Carolina for the past 3 years, and before that she worked at a Hebrew School in Massachusetts. She goes to Panther Creek HS and her favorite subjects are math and science. In college she hopes to study astronomy and/or planetary science. Her hobbies include basketball, reading, and spending time with friends and family.
