JFS Volunteer Spotlight: Merle Schwartz

Merle began volunteering with JFS by doing Shabbat Outreach with her then 11 year old son in 2000, later becoming involved in Chaverim as a driver and lunch helper, which continues to this day. In 2006 she was co-chair of the 1st Mitzvah Day, and again in 2007. Over the years she has helped prepare, pack, & deliver Passover and other holiday gift bags. As a member of the Education Outreach Committee she went to local assisted living facilities and organizations that serve seniors to educate the staff regarding Jewish customs and holidays in order that they could better serve their residents, and to do holiday presentations which included serving challah, apples & honey or latkes & rugelach. In addition, Merle regularly drives Joe Blum, a Chaverim participant, to our programs.

“It is uplifting to be around seniors who are so full of life and life experience. My mother, an assisted living resident out of state, has benefited from various people’s kindnesses, so in a way, I feel I am giving back. Although Joe sometimes forgets where I am taking him, he brightens up when I tell him we are going to Chaverim. His sense of Judaism is so basic to his existence that it warms my heart that I can help facilitate his involvement in our community.” Merle Schwartz, volunteer extraordinaire
